From DJ to KJ: Choosing the Right DJ Equipment
Even if you have been a DJ for many years there is definitely a big difference in the DJ equipment that you will need to make the switch from DJ to KJ. These are some things to consider when purchasing the right equipment for the job.
1. Obviously the karaoke system itself is the most important aspect of making the transformation from DJ to KJ. You will be able to choose from a variety of different systems that all come with a variety of different price tags ranging from $50.00 to $5,000.00. You should keep in mind that you will most likely get what you pay for. Most systems will be ready to play CD's with graphics, some will even play cassettes and 8-tracks. You will be able to buy a set up with a monitor, and a mixer/amplifier combination or you could choose to buy each piece separately. With the combo, you will be getting the advantage of easy portability while sacrificing the ability to replace parts individually if something should go wrong.
2. The microphone is the singer's magic wand so choosing the right one is essential. There are two basic types of microphone. The corded microphone is the less expensive choice and will get the job done, however the cordless microphone will give the user more freedom. Although the cordless microphone is more expensive it is generally preferred over the corded one. If you have a tight budget it might be a good idea to begin with the corded microphone and then upgrade to the cordless as soon as you can afford it. You can always use the corded one as a backup.
3. The lighting and special effects of your show are not essential, however it is these details that get referrals. Keep in mind that all karaoke shows will have music and singing, if you want your show to stand out, you should consider going for the added spice of spotlights, strobe lights, or laser lights. Some places that you play at may have lighting provided, but it is the places that do not, that will be highly impressed with your show. You can also add flare to your show by adding props such as wigs, inflatable instruments and backdrops. You will be noted for going the extra mile when you provide these fun and and generally inexpensive props to your show.
