Ten Essential Questions to Ask Your Cake Designer Before Committing

Brides often spend hours browsing through wedding magazines taking in every detail hoping that her wedding will be just as perfect. The centerpiece of the reception, the wedding cake, is portrayed in these magazines as a towering, decadent, beauty that should never be cut. Yet, that is what we want, a cake so beautiful that we would rather simply admire it than eat it! Asking the right questions and interviewing several designers is the key to having the wedding cake of your dreams. These are some questions to ask before committing.to the baker of course!

1. Ask to see a portfolio of cakes that he/she has designed in the past. If they don't have one, keep looking.

2. Ask for references. You will want to hear it from the bride herself.

3. Ask if the baker can design an original cake or if he/she has specific cakes for you to choose from.

4. Ask if the baker will allow to change the design of the cake due to budget restrictions or for an usually small or large reception.

5. Ask about toppers or tiers for the cake. Do they provide these? Can they be rented or bought from them?

6. If you want flowers included in the cake design ask if the designer will require you to manage the getting of the flowers or if he will be able to work with your florist.

7. When will I be allowed to taste several kinds of cake to choose which I like best?

8. Ask about timing. How long will it take to bake the cake. If the designer tells you that he/she will be completing the cake in a days time, move on. These cakes usually take about 3-5 days to complete.

9. Ask about the ingredients. What kinds of frosting do you use? Do you use commercial flour or are the cakes from a mix?

10. Ask about delivery and set up. Who will deliver the cake and will they be able to fix any problems that might occur during transport. Are there any extra fees for this?

Don't feel uncomfortable asking these types of questions, professional cake designers are used to these common questions from every bride. Do not commit to a designer on the first visit and be sure to get a proposal in writing.
